A Momma's Guide to Creating Lasting Memories at PNC Park

August 2, 2024

This writer was hosted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but all experiences and opinions are her own.

Our family always looks forward to Sunday Pirate games at PNC Park. It is not only a summer tradition but it is always a cherished memory. From the fun kids' giveaways that begin at Pirate Fest in the winter to the email reminders of upcoming promotions, the excitement builds long before the first pitch.

Sunday Funday kicks off before the game with a visit to Federal Street's Family Fun Zone. My daughter's favorite part is always getting a baseball-themed tattoo. The Family Fun Zone opens at 11 and has plenty of family-friendly activities that include music, games, balloon art, tattoos, photo opportunities, and more.

Once we enter the ballpark, our first mission is to collect any fun giveaways for that day. Did you know on select Sundays, kids 14 and under receive a free fun item?  Next up on our to-do list is checking in on the ballpark app. If you haven't downloaded it yet, it is a must! We love how it helps us locate specific food items within the park, offers interactive games for older kids, and provides free items for checking in to the park each game. You can download it HERE.

Our next stop is the STEM Zone near the Right Field Gate. This area is a treasure trove of educational fun, featuring a miniature PNC Park configuration, a multi-purpose play set, and various interactive exhibits focused on STEM learning. One of the highlights is the Diamond Kinetics digital baseball and softball experience, including Pirates Swing Match, where kids can compare their swings with current Pirate players. There's also a broadcast booth where kids can call classic Pirates moments. This area is perfect for children ages five through ten. Every year we make a stop here to take our annual picture to measure how tall we're growing. We end our playtime by heading down the outfield along the Riverwalk to the bouncy bridge and pirate ship climbing structure in the Kids Zone.

After getting all of our energy out it is time for some ballpark food! Did you know there's Family Value Pricing on Sundays? Enjoy $5 hot dogs, Cracker Jacks, large fountain sodas, pretzels, peanuts, popcorn, and water at our Faves on First, Faves on Third, and Faves at Home concession stands!

Only $10 for both!

Finally, it's time to watch some baseball and the fun that comes with it! The Pirates add tons of exciting activities to keep the kids engaged between innings. Our two favorite features are when you get to "Spot the Cow" and cheering for Hannah during the Pittsburgh Pierogi Race! These quirky traditions add a special touch to the game-day experience and keep everyone entertained. In addition to the between-the-inning fun, make sure to be on the lookout for a Pirate home runs that trigger a quick firework display next to the scoreboard.

We got to help everyone Spot the Cow!

Family Fun Sundays end with the opportunity for the kids to get on the field and run the bases after the game. This always makes for a memorable family photo and is a fantastic way for the kids to feel like they’re part of the game, experiencing the excitement of being on the same field as their favorite players. Starting in the 8th inning, the line will begin to form near the STEM Zone area in Right Field. Do not let the long line scare you away - once the game has ended it moves quickly!

A few MacMomma Insider Tips:

If you are lucky enough you can grab a photo, autograph, and even a hug from Pittsburgh Pirates Legend, Manny Sanguillen keeping watch at the Riverwalk Manny's Market at Section 142.

Kiddo needing a break? Head to the club level on the Rotunda to find a quiet, safe, calm space to have a little down time.

Bring the stroller! Not only are they a great place for the little ones to take a rest in, but they also help hold everything you need. Once you get to your seats they can be left in the handicap area. You are able to bring bags with diapers and supplies for the little ones (infant or toddler), or a child with disabilities.

Have a future major leaguer? Make sure to stop in the Clubhouse store and get them an official TOPPS card!

Our day at PNC Park is always packed with fun and memorable activities. From the pre-game festivities at the Family Fun Zone to the thrilling post-game tradition of running the bases, every moment is filled with excitement. The combination of great food, family-fun, and the exciting yinzer atmosphere makes our trips to see the Pirates a cherished family tradition. We can’t wait for our next Sunday Funday at PNC Park!
