HIDDEN SPELLING WORDS
On a white piece of paper let your child write out the spelling words using a white crayon. Once all words have been written use watercolors and paint to make hidden words appear. My kids love this activity and they love the challenge of trying to write with a white crayon!! The results are instantaneous and dramatic.
TIP: You can use regular paper do this activity but I also like to use note cards and have them write one word on each card so they don’t overlap words.
BONUS: If your child has started to learn about ABC order, have them put their spelling words in ABC order using the note cards you just created.
CLOTHESPIN WORDS
Write letters on clothespins and have child pin letters to make words. They can pin onto hanging string (think clothes line) or even an index card. This is also great to strengthen their hands and help with fine motor skills!
TIP: Decide how they will hang before writing the letter so you don’t accidentally write them upside down!!
SWAT AND SPELL
Put letter cards on the floor and using a flyswatter, swat the letters in the order necessary to spell words. This is a great one for active learners because it gets them up and moving.
This is a great way to practice spelling on the go! This is a free app which will allow you to record your voice (or your kids voice) of each spelling word and has a few different ways for them to practice! My daughter loves when I make up funny sentences to go along with her words and I love that she can take this with her in the car when we’re running all over town!
