After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
Originally began as a television series in 2020, with plans for the series to air on Disney+. In February 2024, the series was transformed into a theatrical sequel.
The giant green fish-like creature that provides the Kakamora’s neurotoxin and anti-neurotoxin appears to be a deep sea blob fish (also called a blob sculpin).
Most of Moana’s crewmates names are of Samoan, Hawaiian and Maori origin. Loto (the canoe engineer) means, “Heart” in Samoan, Kele (the grumpy farmer) means, “Call” in Hawaiian, and Moni (the historian and Maui fanatic) means “True” in Samoan and could mean “Money” in Maori. Additionally, Moni looks and sounds a little like Maui. Kotu (the kakamora that joins Moana’s crew) means “Court” in Samoan. The main villain, Nalo (the storm god) means, “Lost” in both Samoan and Hawaiian.
