Ilsa Dahl Cole was born in 1916 in northwest Germany. She was raised in a small farming community and attended a Catholic high school before the Nazis rose to power in 1933. Ilsa’s granddaughter, Emily Loeb, tells her story of survival and immigrating to America, sharing Ilsa’s reflections of a changing society as antisemitism spread throughout Germany.
This event is an installment in the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh's Generations Speaker Series, sponsored by the Sylvia & Martin Snow Family Fund.

In the decade before his arrival in the United States in 1950, Mieczyslaw (Melvin) Goldman saw his home destroyed, his family torn apart, his health ruined, and nearly everyone he had ever known murdered in the death camps of the Third Reich. His survival of the years in the ghetto and Auschwitz, his long and slow recovery, and his attainment of a somewhat normal life are miraculous.
His daughter, Lee Goldman Kikel, grew up in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood and, over the course of five years, worked to turn her father’s story--a telling of his life through a series of recorded audio tapes--into a book recounting the tragedy and hope of one survivor’s experience.
During this talk, Lee will discuss the story she shares in her book, "Perseverance". "Perseverance" is also being adapted into an original play by the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh and Prime Stage Theatre, both recipients of RAD funding. The play will premiere in April 2023.
