Welcome to the 2022 summer camp season at Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History! Where else can kids mask up and wander among real dinosaurs, be encouraged to make a mess, paint with artists, or conduct their own scientific experiments? From throwing a clay pot to identifying specimens from the natural world, Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History offer a range of in-person activities for creative kids and nature lovers alike in a safe environment. Campers will be expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their camp. Learn more about your favorite dinosaurs! Get an up-close look at real fossils in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time. Find out where these big bones came from, and learn all about prehistoric animals. Dig for replica bones like a real paleontologist, make fossil casts, and study authentic dinosaur specimens. Meet the creatures that roamed with the dinosaurs—early mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.

Put on your detective hat and dive into the mysteries of nature at Powdermill. Track animals through the forest and figure out “Whodunit.” Uncover changes in bird populations and investigate clues to reveal stories from the forest’s past. Learn the secrets trees keep beneath their bark and how their fungal agents spread information. Unveil the identities of mysterious organisms, dissect an owl pellet, and discover the role entomology plays in solving wildlife crimes.

Crickets and beetles and flies…oh my! Scour the stream, grounds, and Nature Center to discover Powdermill’s creeping creatures. Construct a 5-star bug hotel while learning how to protect insect habitats. Have fun with mud as you make seed bombs and search for decomposers. Build your own bug, go on a scavenger hunt, and cheer for your favorite cockroach as they compete for the title of “World’s Fastest Roach.”

Uncover the geological mysteries of caves and caverns. Learn lab techniques for analyzing rocks and minerals, then venture outdoors to practice the basics of geology field work on a hiking trip through Schenley Park. Explore the science of unique rock and mineral formations through hands-on experiments. Work with microscopes to investigate and identify fossils. Use your geology knowledge to interpret the hidden secrets of the world.

Get inventive and intentional with recycled materials to create extraordinary art out of the ordinary, while thinking about environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Spend time outside exploring the environment for inspiration in your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a collaborative installation.

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine—from functional vessels like bowls and cups you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design! Try out the potter's wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artworks in the museum collection. Use colorful underglazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up at the museum three to four weeks after camp. A $25 materials fee is included in the price of this camp.
