fostering art as a career

the future is based in the consciousness of knowing ourselves

By jenifer schweitzer May 25, 2026

Late in April, I rode my bike to Pittsburgh’s North Shore for the Inaugural American Marketing Association (AMA) Pittsburgh Marketing Momentum Conference 2026. Substantiating a room of creative colleagues can recognize—the playful adult in the oneself—embody childlike play as a career. In the case of marketing, strategically thinking and imagining what is going to make one brands goals vividly more memorable than the last.

This IS childhood passion for art in exploration, discovery and of problem solving as career. I only discovered this was possible when a visual arts school canvassed my high school art studio to recruit us. THE petition was on! Convincing my parents art school was worth my concerted effort to explore careers. I recall being inspired to by Angela Bower on Norman Lear’s produced Whose the Boss? —Dressed in fine suits, talking presentations and marketing campaigns. I assumed that business school was THE ladder to climb—that suit & shoe wasn’t my fit. So due to the unwavering encouragement of four art teachers, I owe my gratitude, unearthing my exploratory practice.

My first boss, a designer from europe, made my career a memorable start. I truly believe when he discovered me it was due to my desire to dig into creative process. All that I have accomplished filtered through the techniques to build and blend, think things out, mess up and build upon. In todays world play translates new and differently. It is important we experiment in analog play and retain the simple wonders of a used cardboard box as a medium. Giving our eyes pause from the blue light, as we are encouraged to stare into, adopting AI agents as our future framework.
