PGH SK8 is Back for 2024!

Schenley Skate Series Announcement

May 3, 2024

PGH SK8 Collaborative (PGH SK8) will host five Schenley Skate Night events this summer on the following SUNDAYS, with a Family Session from 5p-7:30p and an Adult Session (16+) from 7:30p-10p:May 5, June 9, July 21, August 18, September 8.

“Roller skating is the tool we use to connect our communities.” - Rico Rucker, Jr, Founder and President of PGH SK8 Collaborative.

Presented by PGH SK8 in collaboration with Pittsburgh CitiParks and RAD, monthly Schenley Skate nights are an opportunity to try something new, roller skate outdoors in a safe environment, and build community. PGHSK8 Collaborative, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit, is working to support and encourage all rollerskating styles, abilities, ages, races, bodies, & genders. The organization’s goal is to create safe spaces where people can connect, heal, and build healthy communities through roller skating.

“The problem is there's no public roller skating spaces. So you look for the existing places that are being underutilized. So Schenley Park is primarily an ice rink, but it's also a roller rink now, and that’s so exciting.”- Christine Brill, Founder, Architect and Secretary of PGH SK8 Collaborative.

2023 was an amazing inaugural year for PGH SK8 programming, both at Skate School, located at YouthPlaceson the Northside, and at its Schenley Summer Skate series. In the first summer of roller skating at the Schenley Park Rink, each event gathered over 200 community members from all over Pittsburgh and beyond. In 2024, PGH SK8 is excited to be partnering with CitiParks to bring roller skating back to Schenley Park as one of the only roller rinks within city limits.

"The success and popularity of the Summer SK8 sessions demonstrated an unmet need for a roller skate venue in Pittsburgh. Our CitiParks department will officially open up the Schenley Rink to summer roller skate programming, starting in 2024.” - Kathryn Vargas, Director of Pittsburgh’s Parks & Recreation Department

“I can skate! I will skate! I am a skater!” - PGH SK8’s affirmation, recited at every class, truly encapsulates the feeling and mission of the organization that believes any person at any age can be a skater and reap the benefits of this joyful activity. Serving as a place for both community members and local businesses to come together and celebrate skating in Pittsburgh, the Schenley Skate series is rooted in further sharing a passion for roller skating while honoring its past.

In addition to a unique roller skating experience at the rink, participants can look forward to Foxy Fran’s Catering in May, along with a rotation of local DJs including, DJ JFilly, Bow Jangles and Slowburn.

“Skating has changed my family's lives for the better. Skating is love and I want that love for everybody,” said Dana Bannon, Founder and Vice President of PGH SK8 Collaborative.
