Dena Young Becomes First African American Woman to Lead Department



The Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) Board of Directors appointed Dena Young Chief of School Safety during its Legislative Meeting last night. Chief Young is the first African American woman to hold the position responsible for leading safety and security across the District. Chief Young will transition from her current role as Interim Chief, which she has held since July 1, 2023. Chief Young has been a member of the District’s School Police Force since 1992, serving in multiple capacities within the Office of School Safety, including Assistant Chief of School Safety, K9 Officer, School Police Officer, and Resident Security Specialist. Before joining PPS, Chief Young served as a Police Officer with the Housing Authority of Pittsburgh and an Information and Referral Specialist with the historic Hill House Association. Chief Young is a proud PPS alumna, graduating from Peabody High School as a member of the Class of 1983.

Board Adopts 2024 General Fund Budget With No Tax Increase

In other business, the Board of Directors adopted a 2024 General Fund Budget of $719.4 million with no tax increase. The adopted budget represents an increase of 4.65 percent from the adopted 2023 General Fund Budget. The final budget includes an operating deficit of $29.9 million and does not adhere to the Board’s minimum 5 percent fund balance policy.
