5 Fun Things to do with Kids this Week in the City

Every week Macaroni Kid Pittsburgh City shares things to do with your kids in the 'Burgh over the coming weekend. 

So grab the kids and head out to our local neighborhoods: Braddock, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, East Liberty, Friendship, Garfield, Highland Park, Homewood, Morningside, Northside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Edgewood, Swissvale, Downtown, Hill District, Wilkinsburg, Braddock, Forest Hills, Strip District, Bloomfield, Friendship, and Shadyside for family fun this weekend!

Here are MacaroniKID Pittsburgh City's picks for the five things to do in the City of Pittsburgh with kids from 23rd-29th, 2022. Click on the links for all the details!

1.  End of Summer Roll-Up 

Are you ready for summer to be over or are you still working to cross things off your summer bucket list? With Summer ending and Fall just around the corner, the Autumn Equinox is bound to happen soon! The Autumn Equinox is on one or two days when all points of our Earth see the sunrise at due east and the sunset at due west. The official end of Summer is declared as Labor Day, but these seasons mark time a bit differently. Depending on the area, the trees and animals will respond differently based on the sunlight they receive. POGOH is presenting a Summer Roll Up filled with fun, FREE activities while listening to some great live music! Enjoy FREE coffee and donuts that morning while also attending a fitness class and FREE massages. 

2.  Asian Lanterns Festival

World of Wonders is the Asian Lantern Festival at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium! Get ready for a site to see as you adventure through the mountains, through the jungle, and under the sea to learn different decades of conversation throughout these places with the added bonus of a dazzling display. This festival will be open Thursday through Sunday nights up until October 29th! Ticket pricing ranges from $17-$27. Have the option to walk through this glorious festival or a special edition of a drive-thru night. All entries are timed and will visit length will vary. 3. Adventurous Outdoor Activities

  • Love to go fishing? Well, good news, National Hunting and Fishing Day is Saturday, September 23rd. Make sure to grab your fishing pole, your bait, and your iconic bucket hat! On Wednesday, September 27th, Tri-Anglers are having a FREE Lunchtime Fishing program in downtown Pittsburgh. They catch a variety of different species of fish and release them along the Allegheny River. To come out and fish, there is no need to have fishing experience prior, and is a great activity for all ages!
  • Round and Round we go on the PNC Carousel in Schenley Plaza. Caregivers accompanying any children under the age of 3 may ride for free. For all other ages, it is $2 per ride and all riders must have a token. Tokens can be purchased at the kiosk with a credit card or at the Asia Tea House with cash. Family passes are also up for purchase and these passes allow unlimited rides for 2 adults and up to 4 children!
  • Temperatures are dropping which is the perfect time for a Community Campfire at 3ROC! Cozy up near the fire with friends and neighbors. Those who are 21 and older can Sip n’ Shop with beer from Arboretum Trail Brewing Co.!

4.  National Pancake Day 

YUM! National Pancake Day is so close! On Tuesday, September 26th, grab a plate and fork and stack your plate high of your favorite kinds of pancakes! These could be original, blueberry, chocolate, or a unique favor you have never tried before! Here are some fun recipes like a s’more pancake or a pumpkin pancake, to try at home that will add a bit more of a fun flavor for your mouth! 

  • Not in the mood to make those pancakes? That’s okay, you can go to the top-rated local restaurants! Try The Original Pancake House! They are best known for their hot cakes which have up to 18 different varieties of them! You can choose from chocolate chip to a Georgia Peacan! Next, stop at the Dor-Stop Restaurant in Dormont for their 14 specialty pancakes. They serve Apple Cinnamon, Banana Chocolate Chip, Banana Walnut, and more. Lastly,  Cafe Raymond in the Strip District is highly known for their Blueberry ricotta pancakes. These pancakes have that nice fluffy center, topped with powdered sugar, local maple syrup, and fresh whipped cream.
  • Create a fun, festive Jack ‘O’ Lantern Pancakes or just a normal pumpkin pancake for the kiddos to bring in the spooky spirit. It is super easy to make! All you need is flour, baking powder, salt, white sugar, milk, egg, butter, and orange food coloring. You can also use the pre-made pancake mix and add that food coloring in as well. Don’t forget to make those scary pumpkin faces all you would need is some black frosting.

5. Enjoy a Theater Production! 

RAD Days are back! Somewhere Over the Border by Brain Quijada follows along with a true story of a mother’s journey from El Salvador to the U.S. This mother’s journey follows a different yellow brick road compared to the Wizard of Oz. It is an uplifting tale about what power there is in determination, family, and love. Limited FREE tickets are available for the performances on Saturday, September 23rd, and Sunday, September 24th.
