Communities across the country will celebrate National Bike Month this May. Started by the League of American Cyclists in 1956, National Bike Month promotes cycling as a means of transportation to work, school, everyday errands, enjoying the outdoors, and for fitness and recreation.
Locally, Bike Pittsburgh (BikePGH) and community partners will pop up at three “Commuter Café” locations across the city on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Learn about cycling, meet bike commuters, and enjoy complimentary breakfast, then a drink at happy hour. This rain or shine event is free to anyone arriving by bicycle.
Members of the press are also invited to cover the morning bike ride with Mayor Gainey and officials, which will be meeting at the City County Building (Ross St) at 8:30 a.m. and ending at BikePGH’s popup outside 725 Penn Ave.
Pittsburgh is in the top 15 U.S. cities for bike commuting. BikePGH has tracked Penn Avenue commuter traffic on Bike to Work Day, and expects hundreds of bike riders at this year’s event. This data shows bike commuters made up about a quarter of the peak morning traffic on Penn Ave downtown 7:15am - 9:15am for past events.
“BikePGH wants to reward YOU for taking a ride on Bike to Work Day - whether you’re an everyday commuter, or just giving city biking a try for the first time, come celebrate with us! Get outside, reduce air pollution, and score some great treats and new bike friends along the way" says Kéya Joseph, Events Director at BikePGH.
Need a bike? Bike Share Pittsburgh’s POGOH fleet is offering free 30-minute trips on this day.
Bike to Work Day Commuter Cafés are generously sponsored by Dashcam.Bike, Pittsburgh Innovation District, and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, with support from Dollar Bank, Pitt Sustainability, Convive Coffee, De Fer Coffee & Tea, Kaya, Brooklyn Bagel at Arsenal, and East End Food Co-op. Programming is also made possible through membership support, a critical part of BikePGH’s work to create safer streets for all. As a thank you, BikePGH’s May membership drive offers a special gift for new and renewing BikePGH members.
