Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History Featured Camps: Ages 11-13

2022 camps offer a range of in-person activities for creative kids and nature lovers alike!

Welcome to the 2022 summer camp season at Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History! Where else can kids wander among real dinosaurs, be encouraged to make a mess, paint with artists, or conduct their own scientific experiments? From throwing a clay pot to identifying specimens from the natural world, Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History offer a range of in-person activities for creative kids and nature lovers alike in a safe environment. Campers will be expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their camp. Featured Camps: Ages 8-11

Stories on Screen

3, 2, 1... Action! Become an art camp filmmaker! Find inspiration from Carnegie Museum of Art’s collection and learn about the stories told in art. Bring your drawings, paintings, and sculptures to life in an animated stop-action sequence. Play, practice, perform, and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a short movie in the galleries! Use art materials to make scenery and props for your productions. Invite friends and family to your art movie premiere on the last day of camp.

Camp- Small Animals

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Investigate healthy habitats and animal care for diverse species like bugs, lizards, and mammals. Learn about animal nutrition in the wild, and perform experiments to uncover the ingredients in dog food. Meet some furry friends. Analyze the behavior of animals large and small on an extended-day trip to the National Aviary. Compare animal anatomy by examining skeletons from museum specimens. Try your hand at real and/or digital dissections of insects, fish, and mammals.

Youth Museum Institute: Med Camp

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Investigate the intricate balance of the human body. Dissect a brain, and conduct a mock coronary bypass on a real heart. Discover surprising evidence in fossils and ancient skeletons that reveals how medicine and disease have evolved throughout time. Find out what it’s like to be a real medical student on a field trip to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s training facilities.

Out-of-this-World Architecture

If aliens built a city, what would it look like? Use your imagination and your most far-out ideas to create an urban landscape from another planet. What do your alien friends need in their city? How is it different from or similar to the world you live in on earth? Use the collection at Carnegie Museum of Art to look for interesting shapes, colors, and materials to incorporate into your design.

Art and the Environment

Get inventive and intentional with recycled materials to create extraordinary art out of the ordinary, while thinking about environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Spend time outside exploring the environment for inspiration in your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a collaborative installation.

Youth Museum Institute: Designing the Future

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Through hands-on creative challenges, learn how nature inspires engineers to create sustainable innovations and build the future right now. Explore examples of green technology and sustainable design in the museum and other buildings nearby. Learn how buildings can help address the challenges of climate change. Visit Laurel Caverns to explore a design wonder made by nature, then design environmentally informed structures of your own.

Eco City Planners

Learn from the past and jump into the future to discover ways cities are designed with the environment in mind. Take a tour of places around Oakland and learn how art and technology are used to create sustainable buildings. Study our architecture exhibition for design inspiration. Complete challenges and work as a team to design and build a model eco-city from the ground up.

Youth Museum Institute: Vet Camp- Large Animals

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Examine the biology, medicine, and health issues unique to large animals. Start by investigating the amazing skeletal structures and circulatory systems that support giraffes and dinosaurs. Discover how giant creatures create their own mini-ecosystems with fascinating examples of symbiosis and parasitism between animals of all sizes. Visit a ranch for horseback riding, and compare modern and prehistoric horses at the museum to track their evolutionary path.

Youth Museum Institute: Survivor

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

From basic biology to high-tech sportswear, investigate how animals and people adapt to extreme environments. Find out how your own sensory systems and reflexes measure up to animal survival instincts. Improve your outdoor adventuring skills by learning about basic first aid, nutrition, and hydration needs for camping and hiking. Create a water purification system, and concoct the perfect trail mix for a day hike. Compare traditional fishing and hunting techniques across cultures, and hike the trails at Powdermill Nature Reserve.

Field trip to Powdermill Nature Reserve: museum pick up at 6:30 p.m. Late afternoon snack provided.

Youth Museum Institute: Go Pittsburgh

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Get ready for an adventure as you explore Pittsburgh by foot, bus, and subway! Navigate through Pittsburgh’s kaleidoscope of cultural traditions. Visit with leaders of local organizations, including BirdSafe Pittsburgh to learn what you can do to make city life better for all of Pittsburgh’s inhabitants. Lace up your sneakers—this is an active camp with daily hiking and public transit excursions.

Youth Museum Institute: Strangest Things

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Turn your world upside down as you explore the strangest things. Examine the line where the known and unknown meet and use the tools of science to separate science fact from fiction. Check out weird museum collections and observe oddities of the natural world. Identify artificial and natural electromagnetic fields and see if you can manipulate them to transmit messages. Dig into humanity’s collective fears through exploration of our shared myths and legends.
